This event was postponed until 21-24 June 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Number of participants: minimum 16 – maximum 30.
Registration priority is given to ESLAV members until February 29th, 2020. After this date, seats will be offered on first-come, first-served basis, so early registration is strongly recommended. Deadline for registration is March 31, 2020.
The key objectives of this Summer School are:
- To learn about the most relevant anaesthetic and analgesic protocols and monitoring for the species used in animal research.
- To learn about the different euthanasia techniques in the covered species and understand the importance of the correct choice in this fields.
- To acquire manual skills by means of species specific wet labs.
The programme will cover the following topics:
- Introduction to Anaesthesia (Basic principles and definitions, Anaesthesia and the 3Rs, Preparation for anaesthesia, preoperative care)
- Anaesthesia delivery units and instrumentations
- Anaesthetic agents and safety issues
- Pain (physiology and assessment)
- Non-human primates: anaesthesia & analgesia
- Rodents, Rabbits and Guinea Pigs: anaesthesia & analgesia and Refinements
- Aquatic animals: cephalopods, pain assessment in fish, anaesthesia & analgesia and euthanasia
- Farm animals (pig and sheep): anaesthesia & analgesia, vascular accesses and catheters, and Refinements
The main instructors are experts in the field such as Alessandra Bergadano (University of Bern), Paul Flecknell (Flaire Consultants), Viola Galligioni (Trinity College Dublin), Noemi Romagnoli (University of Bologna), Lynne Sneddon (University of Liverpool), Domenico Ventrella (University of Bologna). They will be supported in the practical activities by the trained personnel of the University of Bologna.

For ESLAV members the registration fee is €786, and this includes Summer School fee, meals (lunches, coffee breaks), and accommodation (4 nights in a single room at Meditur hotel Bologna, breakfast included) for the length of the course (4 days). If you want to stay in double or triple rooms, you will need to contact the hotel personally and proceed with the booking independently (firstname.lastname@example.org ;object: ESLAV-ECLAM Summer school). If lodging is not needed, the enrollment fee for ESLAV members is €550 and includes School fee, lunch and coffee breaks.
For non-ESLAV members, the fee will be €50 more expensive for each option: €836 with lodging or €600without accommodation. These prices do not include airport transfers, visa costs, insurance (travel or health), airfares or any other additional expense.
Transportation from the hotel to the veterinary faculty is included in the registration fee (bus or taxi depending on availability); as well as insurance during teaching activities carried out in the Department.

Lessons will be held at the Department of Veterinary Medical Sciences of the University of Bologna, located in Ozzano dell’Emilia (40064 BO, Via Tolara di Sopra, 50) and is about 12 km from the center of Bologna; 20-30 minutes using public transportation (bus or train). The Department is EAEVE accredited and has been recognized among Italian Departments of Excellence, qualifying as the first absolute in the Area CUN 07 – Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences, and is Ozzano dell’Emilia, an Italian town of 13,804 inhabitants, is located between the Via Emilia and the beautiful hills of the Regional Park of Gessi Bolognesi and Calanchi dell’Abbadessa. Its territory is crossed by the Strada dei Vini e Sapori Colli d’Imola, where you can savor typical Emilian cuisine dishes and wines; moreover, you can take advantage of your free time doing outdoor activities surrounded by nature (e.g. walks/trekkings, running and cycling) or visiting the gorgeous Bologna. This city is historically steeped in culture, where the oldest university in Europe stands, home to great intellectuals, the capital of Emilia-Romagna and one of the most important Italian cities.
To get to the hotel from the airport, it is advisable to take advantage of the Aerobus service, which takes you from the airport to Bologna Central Train Station. From the Bologna bus station, easily reachable from the central train station with a 5 minute walk, take the bus (TPER spa) number 101 towards Imola and exit at the Campana stop; the hotel is easily reachable by walking (190 meters from the bus stop). Transportation from the hotel to the veterinary faculty is included in the registration fee.
To complete the enrollment, it is necessary to attach a copy of an identity document; the absence of this it will not be possible to access the ESLAV ECLAM Summer School.
On Friday June 26, 2020, a mock ECLAM exam will be organized at the Department of Veterinary Medical Sciences of the University of Bologna, Ozzano dell’Emilia.
