Internship in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia with focus on experimental animals

The Experimental Surgery Facility at the Experimental Animal Center, University of Bern (Switzerland), invites applications for a 12-month Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia Internship starting August 2026 or by agreement.
This position focuses on anaesthesia, analgesia, and peri-operative care of research animals involved in advanced experimental procedures, including cardiovascular, neurovascular, and transplantation surgeries.
The facility is an ECVAA satellite center equipped with state-of-the-art technology and supports both short- and long-term studies, primarily involving pigs, minipigs, rabbits, and rats.
The intern will work under the direct supervision of ECVAA Diplomates, including a double Diplomate (ECVAA and ECLAM) and an ECZM Diplomate, within a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary environment involving veterinarians, physicians, biologists, and engineers.
Opportunities for academic exchange, clinical exposure at veterinary teaching hospitals, and potential extension into a Doctorate (Dr. Med. Vet.) focused on pain-related research are available.
Requirements / Desired qualifications
- Veterinary degree (Master’s in Veterinary Medicine or equivalent)
- Interest in veterinary anaesthesia, analgesia, and peri-operative care
- Previous anaesthesia experience preferred
- Experience with ICU and/or research animals advantageous
- Motivation to work in a research and multidisciplinary environment
- Strong communication skills and team-oriented mindset
- Fluency in English (required)
- Willingness to learn basic German
- Knowledge of German or French considered an advantage
